Steven Winkelstein

I’m a creative powerhouse based in the congress park neighborhood of Denver, CO. I love the Cheesman Park area and all that Denver has to offer, and I’m also a frequent traveler around the states and the globe. I work in software design, leading the UX and UI at a Denver Startup in the HR employee-experience space. I also run a small creative studio, through which I publish children’s books and other products in order to raise money for social causes that I care about, such as education and LGBTQ suicide prevention. My latest project is thesneakrets.com. I’m passionate about food, travel, people, civil rights, science, and the arts. I’m told I’m an old soul and that my smile can light up a room. You can find me meditating, working on a project, or out and about having fun with friends.

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My parents are still based in Margate City, NJ, the little sleepy beach town where I grew up. My brother, who is also one of my best friends, lives in Chicago with his husband. They are fathers to my favorite pit in the world, Herman Pickles.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I’ve always been a creator, whether I was working in marketing, graphic design, customer experience, or software. I love to build things that help people, and prefer it to be in a space I consider actively beneficial for our culture and the planet. I currently work in software design and I hope to continue to build my children’s brands and make a social impact in education, where I believe our most important human potential still needs a lot of support.

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Cho77 and Cholon are my absolute favorites. Uchi is fantastic as well. La Loma has my favorite green chili and I love the margs at Los Chingones. Vine Street Pub will always hold a dear place in my heart for the Swan Song IPA. And my favorite restaurant/bar community is at Xbar!

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
I was in Boulder 5 years before I moved to Denver in 2018.

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
Jennifer Clark. And she’ll kill me for writing this. She’s obessed with buying too much furniture and she’s the perfect mix between a wise 70-year-old woman and fun-loving teenage girl. She’s my hero.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
Barcelona. It’s my favorite place in the world. I love the food, the architecture, the sea, and the people are beautiful and lovely.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
2001: A Space Odyssey and Breaking Bad.

Q: What advice would you give to people?
Don’t take advice from strangers. JK. I think the most important thing I’ve learned in life is don’t underestimate yourself, don’t limit yourself, and don’t let others put you down. In the wise words of Joseph Campbell, “Follow your bliss.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
I want to sail across the Atlantic. There’s something epic and romantic about that journey, especially growing up in the Americas.

Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
Radiohead or Lemon Jelly

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Hamburger Mary’s! Billy the bartender is my favorite.

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
I would love to have lunch with Barack Obama. We wouldn’t talk politics, we’d just tell each other corny jokes and people watch. I’d take him to The Rye Society for a good deli sandwich. We’d have a good chat about their Larry David portrait.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
Denver reminds me a bit of Philly in terms of the individual but closely connected neighborhoods. I love the different pockets and scenes around town.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
Writing poetry in a Château on the moon, in my undies, with a live stream to YouTube.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
Deep down I’m a Jimmy Buffet fan.

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
Santa Barbara, on a cliff, at night, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, watching the bioluminescent algae light up the dark waters with green luciferin.

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
July. It has my birthday and July 4th, which reminds me of summers on the Jersey shore. And July 11th is the best calendar day, of course. My birthday PLUS free slurpies.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
Rosenberg’s Bagels

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
My brother.
